After the Christmas break there was just a few bits and pieces
to finish off on the film so Roger was not at the studios very
much, now and again he came to do voice overs and one day I went
to the cutting room and sat quietly at the back while they were
editing the film and he was in a sound proof room saying the words
that had been obliterated by the noise of the action going on.
This was a part of the filming that I had not seen before and
every new thing that I saw made me realise just how technical
and clever the film makers had to be to produce such amazing things
on the screen.
By the end of January Roger had gone on to have a holiday and
plan for his next film which he made between Bonds and so as I
was bored by being a waitress and was only working at it to meet
him I decided it was time for me to move on as well so I said
goodbye to all the people that I worked with and found myself
another job. I was very lucky that in those days jobs were quite
easy to come by and I found a lovely little job in Fulmer which
was quite close to Pinewood and then when I heard that “For
Your Eyes Only” was being made I went along to the studios
to see if I could get past the security at the gate. (Somehow
I missed “Moonraker”).
"In
this photo, it says, 'Am saying cheese', when in the fact he was
saying 'Shiiiit'. Which is why I had such a silly grin on my face".
I was stopped at the gate and asked if I had any business there
so I told them that I had business with Roger Moore’s secretary,
which wasn’t really untrue as I had a photo of my self taken
with him that I really wanted him to sign, anyway they did not
question me further and let me through. I made my way to where
I knew his office was and knocked on the door. I had never been
inside before, it was furnished very luxuriously, with red velvet
covered settees and chairs dotted about, it also has a shower
and a bed. His secretary Doris Spriggs answered the door and asked
me in, Doris knew me as she also used to eat in the restaurant
although not at Roger’s table. She had also promised me
her job when she retired but I moved to Wales before that happened
so I missed out big time there! I showed her the photo and asked
if Roger would sign it for me and, as luck would have it, he walked
in at that very moment. Although we had not met for over two years
he recognised me and greeted me with a peck on the cheek, not
a smacker like I got at the party, but very satisfying any way.
He was very impressed with the photo that had been taken on my
own camera by one of the photographers on the film, it had taken
quite a while to get it developed as this was in the days before
digital cameras and instant printing. I hasten to add that it
didn’t take two years but this was the first chance that
I had had to ask Roger to sign it. He duly signed the photo, To
Doreen with Love from Roger. I have it to this day in pride of
place along with another one with him taken on the set of “For
Your Eyes Only” but we have not reached there yet. This
picture is the one at the start of this story and it holds so
many memories for me. Every time I look at it these memories come
flooding back and I know they will live with me forever.
