Michael
Caine's Speech to Roger Moore.

"Having just seen Roger on television
I realise where Englebert Humperdink got his hair from (Very
big laughs)
Just before coming here a reporter was
questioning me about Roger and asking what is the difference,
you're a contemporary of Roger's which is a lie for a
start, the first time I met Roger I was on the dole, and
he was very rich and famous, so I don't see how that makes
me a contemporary (laughter) and he was also charming
and handsome, and I claimed to be all those things
..
two out of four isn't bad (laughter) l looked at this
journalist and said what is the difference between me
and Roger? And I said I will tell you, you could be me
but you could never be Roger, I said you could never be
as handsome and charming, and I know because I always
wanted to be Roger, I went to the same tailor Dougie Hayward
( laughter) he always slipped up when it came to my suit's
( laughter) I went to Turnbull and Asser for my shirts,
but I didn't have my haircut at the funny place in St
James ( laughter) I didn't want to expire EH anyway (
laughter) .When I met Roger, this man was very famous
he was The Saint, I was walking along Piccadilly with
Terence Stamp, and I am not name dropping here because
Terence Stamp was my flatmate and he was unknown as well,
we were both on the dole. When ever you see a star you
look and say look who's over there, its Roger Moore and
he started to cross the road and come towards us, and
we said in low voices look he's coming towards us, and
we don't know him and he doesn't know us, so we are standing
there and Roger came up to me and said "Is your name
Michael Caine"? I didn't have to have to ask him
his name, and he said "I saw you on television last
night, and you are going to go a long way" and he
walked away. Was that not an extraordinarily nice thing
to do for a young actor ( clapping audience) and we did
go a long way we got to walk all the way back to Shepherd's
Bush ( enormous laughter) with Michael Caine laughing
greatly, I just made that up ( more laughter) anyway eventually
when I became rich and famous we became friends ( laughter)
you do know when you're poor and unknown you cannot become
friends with somebody rich and famous, I had to dump all
my old friends, ( laughter) you can never relax at dinner,
you're always going to think somebody is going to ask
for something ( much laughter) . The two things I hate
most in the world are giving speeches, and doing long
journeys in aeroplanes, you would have to pay me a great
deal of money, for either of them and I would hate it,
and Roger does nothing else but this at his own expense
and his own free will for children in need, and I think
that is extraordinary. (Very loud applause) Also as a
personal friend, as Bryan ( Forbes ) has said everybody
says he is the most loyal of people, you really feel that
if you were in trouble, and you needed some help he would
be the most well mannered turn down in your life ( much
laughter)
I love this man dearly, and I trust him more than any other
man in the world, I feel that he would do anything for me
and I would do anything for him, and as Michael Winner said
he should get a bloody knighthood for what he does".
( extremely large applause)
