14 June 2003

The name's Bond. Sir James Bond.

Roger Moore, the suave actor who played the British master spy, heads another glittering roll call of showbusiness stars and sporting icons in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Comic Billy Connolly, pop star Sting and Naked Chef Jamie Oliver are also honoured.

Connolly, a former shipyard worker known as the Big Yin, gets a CBE while actress Helen Mirren, famed for roles which involve disrobing, becomes a dame.

Troubled England soccer captain David Beckham, as widely leaked, receives an OBE as does England's "evergreen" wicket-keeper/batsman Alec Stewart, to add to his MBE.

And there is even an OBE in the Diplomatic List for Harry Potter! But not that one. The recipient with the same name as the boy-wizard is rewarded for his work as a natural resources and rural livelihoods adviser in Malawi.

Jim Dale, the man who made the Harry Potter audio books famous in the United States, gets an MBE in the Diplomatic List. Dale, who became the Toast of Broadway when he created the flamboyant title role in the musical Barnum, has recorded readings of the first four Harry Potter books.

As ever, the famous, like Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop, who becomes a dame, rub shoulders with those who perform less glamorous jobs, like lollipop ladies and Mrs Mopps.

A "pukka" MBE goes to Jamie Oliver, TV's so-called Naked Chef and restaurateur, for services to the hospitality industry. He has been described as the hottest young star of TV cookery.

The arts, fashion, broadcasting and journalism are also well represented with a CBE in the Diplomatic List for the award-winning designer famous for his shock tactics Alexander McQueen and an OBE for Loyd Grossman, former presenter of the TV Masterchef programme, who worked on the Better Hospital Food campaign.
