Today in countries like
ours we take it for granted that no one dies from tetanus as we all
have access to the simple, low cost vaccine that immunises us
against this disease. But maternal and neonatal tetanus kills 200,000 new-born
babies and 30,000 women every year.
UNICEF is working to
eliminate tetanus globally by 2005. With your support we'll do this
by immunising 100 million women of child-bearing age, working
locally to improve birthing practices. UNICEF UK is playing its part
in this global campaign by committing itself to eliminating tetanus
in Bangladesh and Tanzania by raising £2
million.
It costs just £1 to protect a mother and her unborn child from
this needless death. |

With his health card on top of him, an infant boy
sleeps in the arms of his mother, Aurera Ndhaze, at a health centre
in the town of Boane, some 40km from Maputo, the capital of
Mozambique. At this vaccination session he will receive vaccines for
DPT-hepB, against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus and hepatitis B.
