Sir Roger and Lady Kristina attended the UNICEF Charity Gala Night "Bal de la Rose d'Or" in Lucerne.

The Festival de La Rose d’Or took place for the first time in the city of Lucerne, Switzerland, from April 13 to April 18, 2004.

The traditional Festival retains as its centrepiece the most important and prestigious international competition for television entertainment, which annually attracts programme producers and entertainment executives from all over the world. For 2004, new television events were held to attract a general audience.

The Rose d’Or Festival wishes to make a contribution to those less fortunate and in dire need by dedicating one evening to raise funds for a selected registered charity at the “Bal de la Rose d’Or”. The charity supported this year is UNICEF, Switzerland. The Rose d’Or Charity Award, a highlight of the Bal de la Rose d’Or, will be presented each year to a well-known personality from the world of entertainment in recognition of his or her outstanding contribution to global humanitarian causes.

The Rose d’Or Charity Award 2004

The first Rose d’Or Charity Award - winner Sir Peter Ustinov, one of the world’s most respected actors, sadly passed away at the age of 82 at the end of March. His loss has been met with great sorrow by the Rose d’Or Team. Sir Peter Ustinov had been committed to the needs of UNICEF for more than 30 years, using his fame to fight for a better world. As a tribute to Sir Peter Ustinov, other Goodwill Ambassadors attended the Bal de la Rose d’Or, including Sir Roger Moore.

Sir Roger Moore, Harry Belafonte, Shane Richie, Nana Mouskouri and Christopher Lee were among the stars at Golden Rose Awards ceremony.

The gala event was dedicated to raising funds for UNICEF Switzerland.

The proceeds from the Bal de la Rose d'Or were donated to UNICEF. These funds will go directly into education programmes designed to stop the circumcision of young girls in Africa. Currently they occur at a frightening rate of one every 15 minutes.

Shashi Tharoor, under-secretary for the United Nations, called for UNICEF's Public Service Announcements (PSAs) to be aired more widely by commercial television channels worldwide. He added that education through the media is vital to UNICEF: "This need not be at odds with their quest for ratings and we want to talk directly with TV channels to get our educational films shown more often." For the past 60 years, celebrities have offered their support to UNICEF as Goodwill Ambassadors.

The actor Danny Kaye was the first to embrace the cause in 1954, and has been followed by legends such as Audrey Hepburn, Roger Moore and the German television presenter Nina Ruge.

The ambassadors use their name and fame to highlight UNICEF projects and lend their voice to the children of the world.

These projects operate in a total of 158 countries to develop health, nutrition and education, particularly for girls. A key achievement has been to contribute to the virtual eradication of polio, as a result of which the child mortality rate of under-fiveyear- olds has been reduced by one third in 60 countries.

Many thanks to Michèle Boillod, Festival Manager and Neeta Kaelin-Dewan, Project Manager of the "Bal de La Rose d'Or".
