Dear Sir Roger,
On the Forum, we were wondering why there is still so much publicity on and fans of The Saint, The Persuaders, your 007, but seemingly so little interest in Ivanhoe. Has this always been so? Was it judged to be a childrens' series? How do you look back on Ivanhoe and how was it appreciated in it's own time?
Many thanks, and many good years to come for you, I hope.
Hi
I think because Ivanhoe was filmed in black and white, it hasn't had the repeat success of the other shows on tv (I know some early Saints were in B&W too, but because of the colour episodes they remain popular too). I am surprised it hasdn't been released on DVD as most things have now.
It was viewed as a family series, but aimed towards children. It was fun to make and I think achieved good ratings at the time. Perhaps you should petition Columbia to have it released on DVD!
Dear Sir Roger,
I know this is not a very convenient topic but as it's in the news in Germany these days, I still want to pop this question to you.
What do you think about the UNICEF "scandal" in Germany? What are your comments on this affair and what do you think people should do? Stop giving is one alternative, and a lot of people already have done so. What can UNICEF do to re-gain their trust and support?
Thanks!
Nell
Dear Nell
Th
is is something that concerns me greatly. Last week I hear my dear friend Dietrich Garlicks resigned from UNICEF. That was a sad day.
I believe - and I do not yet have all the facts - the "scandal" resulted from UNICEF employing an events company in Germany to organise certain functions. That events company then charged a fee from profits made - meaning the event was not "all in aid of charity". The government therefore withdrew UNICEF's charity status in Germany as it was seen to not abide by strict charity rules.
I can't really say any more until I know more myself. But I would add please do not stop giving - funds will reach the children. They always have and always will.
I hope everything is resolved quickly to avoid any more damage.

Hi Roger,
Many thanks for all your great TV and film work, I have thoroughly enjoyed your presence and humour over the years in the cinema and on my television, (even if the one liners and resulting ease at which ladies could be attracted in your films gave me a slightly skewiff view of the world in my formative years!)
Whilst I'm a huge fan of your James Bond films and also The Persuaders, as a car fanatic I'd be intrigued to learn about some of the cars you have owned! I understand from reading various articles you owned a Volvo P1800 whilst working on The Saint, and later on a Range Rover and a Rover SD1 3500 (there's a great picture of you with newly acquired "OUL 334R" at Pinewood studios...) If you would like to recall some of the cars you have owned, why you bought them and why you eventually parted with them, I'd be fascinated to know!
Kindest Regards
Andrew Howard
Hi Andrew
Yes I did own a P1800.Several in fact.
I can't possibly recall all my ca
rs, though do remember the day I bought a Rolls Royce. I thought them pretentious, but was persuaded that I deserved one to ride in comfort. It was delivered to Pinewood just before Christmas 1976.I was going home to a Christmas party for my children and friends, and had the make-up and wardrobe people at the studio fit me out in a Santa suit and with white whiskers.
On driving home I was drawing all sorts of looks.
"oh no," I thought, "I knew I shouldn't have bought this show-off car, they're all looking at me."
Then I realised what I was wearing!
I love Volvos and still drive them today, along with Mercedes and VW.

DEAR SIR ROGER,
As you starred in Moonraker ,one of many famous films to feature space, and with the advent of Sir Richard Branson`s
space planes only two years away, can I ask would you consider been a passenger on the space plane?.Is the universe a subject that you dwell on and an ambition for you?
Also as we all grew up in the century that space travel became so real, with NASA and so many great films to fuel our immagination, have you any favourite space film you have enjoyed watching ?
BEST WISHES GRAHAM
Hello Graham
I have no real desires to go into space to be honest. I do so much flying as it is. Plus I did it all in Moonraker! Ha ha.
I'm not a big sci-fi film fan. I much prefer comedy, adventure or drama. I have no real desires to go into space to be honest. I do so much flying as it is. Plus I did it all in Moonraker! Ha ha.

Hello Roger,
Perhaps you may know that George MacDonald Fraser who wrote the screenplay for "Octopuss y" died last month.
I am something of a fan of his Flashman series of novels, so I am wondering if you have any thoughts or recollections of the man either as an author or screenwriter - particularly as I'm of the opinion you would have made a brilliant Flashman on-screen.
Best regards
David S
Hi David
Yes I heard George had passed away. How sad. He was a great writer and I certainly enjoyed working with him on Octopussy.
Am I too old to play Flashman now do you reckon?

Dear Sir Roger.
My Name is Volker Möbus and I am 24 Years old. I come from Halle/Saale, that is in East-Germany. Since the wall came down and we got western tv I am a big fan from yours. You was in all the years an idol to me and you still are. For example I lost in the last half year 15 kg and have now my normal weight and my motivation was that you did the same between the "The Persuaders" and "Live and Let Die". Thanks for that.
Now to my question. I know that you like classical music. In my hometown is born the componist Georg Friedrich Händel, who is also well known in England, and every year here is a international Händel-Festival. So my question is ,did you like the music from Händel and did you ever hearded about that festival ?
I thank you for reading my question and wish you health and a lot of fun in the future.
Your Fan, Volker Möbus
Hi Volker
Yes I am a big fan of Handel. I think I've heard of the festival, though I've not yet been.
I have visited East Germany, both before and after the wall. I think it's a lovely country and I'm so pleased they have the good taste to show my films and tv shows there!
