Dear Sir Roger,

I wonder if you recall my uncle, Malcolm Gregory?  It was back in 1955 when MGM called Malcolm in to advise on wrestling techniques for a scene you were to perform with Sean McClory in the film Diane, also starring Lana Turner.  Malcolm often spoke of your generosity and how he enjoyed working with you on the film set for ten days.  Sadly Malcolm passed away a few years ago but I was looking through some old belongings and found a news clipping about the time he met you.  He went on to be athletics director at the Jonathan Club in Los Angeles as well as working in broadcast news. His exotic stories were wonderful to me when I was growing up in a small town in England, the “my uncle knew James Bond” story was a special favourite. He was inspirational to me to take up writing, there are examples of my work on www.thelongcircle.com if you find a free moment to take a look.

I hope you are keeping well.

Regards

Ian Bellard

Dear Ian
Curiously I was only talking about this wrestling scene the other day, as part of my trawl through the hazy memories of Diane for my book.
I'd had a terrible accident the day before we were supposed to film these scenes, whilst riding a horse, and was black and blue all over.
I landed feet first every time Sean threw me, I wasn't going to add any more bruises to my already battered body.

I recall your uncle well, along with many moves he taught me

Dear Sir Roger,

It was great to see all the pictures of your birthday celebrations.  You're much loved by many people.

Anyway, to get to my question.  There's an episode of Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partridge, where Alan was supposed to interview you, but all he got was a quick 'hello Alan' over the phone before the signal failed.  There was also an episode of I'm Alan Partridge where Alan acts out the entire pre-credits sequence from The Spy Who Loved Me.  He also acts out Maurice Binder's credit sequence from beginning to end.  It was very funny.

I've heard that Steve Coogan is a genuine fan which explains Alan's obsession with you (the picture of you from For Your Eyes Only, which appears on this website is often seen framed in Alan's bedroom.)

So have you seen either of these episodes and are you as much a fan of Alan Partridge is he is of you?

By the way, I'm looking forward to the memoirs.  I hope you reveal what you did to Grace Jones to make her chase you around the set of a View to a Kill.

Best Wishes Roger.

Gary

Hi Gary
Yes Steve Coogan is a fan. If you remember his first Alan Partridge chat show, he said I was to appear and had a photo of me on set. Of course it was all a gag.
However my father called me up and said he thought it very unprofessional that I'd been advertised and did not bother to turn up ... I tried telling him it was a gag but I'm not sure he believed me.
I like Steve Coogan. Maybe he'll give me a job one day.

Dear Sir Roger, my question this month is about two great actress that dead recently, Lois Maxwell and Deborah Kerr. In the case of Lois Maxwell, you described her like woman with great sense of humor, by the way, she worked in a film that was a parody of Bonds movies, the Italian movie titled “OK Connery” (1967), with Neil Connery, brother of Sean and Bernard Lee. Did you see this movie? Don’t was problematic for this actors (Maxwell and Lee), played in movies with similar roles to the Bond films?
Deborah Kerr passed away too. Sir Roger, your first work in a movie like extra, was in “Perfect Strangers “ (1945), movie in which the main character was performed by Mrs. Kerr. Which are your memories about this film and Mrs. Kerr? That this two great women, Rest in Peace.
Dixon Moya.

Dear Dixon
I had a spit and a cough in Perfect Strangers. There isn't much o report on it really. It was the first time I met Deborah Kerr and she was lovely.

Hello Sir Roger, Im a 15 year old boy from Australia who emails you every month, although my question hasnt yet been picked. I have 2 questions, In the late 70's, a popular british series called 'George and Mildred' aired. In one of the early episodes, I hear Mildred (Yootha Joyce) reading about the best dressed men and she mentions you as being one of them according to the magazine she reads in the show. Did this really happen? Also, my favorite Bond film of yours is A View to a Kill, and I often see you talking about your Bond expierience, do you get tired of talking about being (the best ever) bond?

Ah, dear Yootha. We were at RADA together and I remember her fondly.
I believe I did get a name check in one of her shows. How kind.

Do I ever get tired about talking about Bond? Well, depends how interesting the questions are. I don't mind talking about Bond, why should I, I'm proud of my time as 007. I can't blank that out

I have to say I love all that you do, but I was wondering if you have been watching 'LONG WAY DOWN' the have just visited a Ugandan School called St Martins, how appaling for all involved.
Children from such young ages taken and trained in warfare.  It was very touching to see al the good work, are you involved with that project, and what are the aims of UNICEF for the coming years to help those children and their families? Best Wishes Jan Cook

Hi Jan
No I haven't been watching it I'm afraid.
It's an ongoing problem in Uganda and one I know UNICEF is working hard to try and end. These children know o little about life, and they are given guns and taught to fight. It is truly awful, and the day guns are exchanged for pens and books cannot come soon enough.

Hi Sir Roger

Congratulations on receiving The Walk of Fame Star in Hollywood. Your family must be so proud of you. Good to see David Hedison there too. He is always saying very lovely things about you. Do you have any good memories of working with him and are you and his family good friends? Do you both keep in touch on special occasions?

Thank you, whoever you are.
Yes David and I keep in contact and see each other as often as we can - in the US and in Europe. He's a lovely, lovely man and one of my closest friends.
We first worked together on a Saint, and then did three movies. I wish it was more
